Transcript of the Crakehall section of a Survey of the Lordship of Middleham, about 1602.

This is in ff 72a to 76a of the National Archives document LR2/195. Transcribed by Ian Hancock, 2001

The document is in latin, and the entries for all the tenants are in a standard form, which I have translated in full for the first entry. Subsequent entries are my summaries, but they contain all the information of the original. In a Summary document (Yorkshire Archaeological Society Record Series, Vol.CIV) the grazing for beasts is given as “beastgates”. For convenience I have used this term in my summary, abbreviated to “bg” - the numbers are given in the original as shown in the first entry.

The Summary states that the best sort of meadow is worth 5s per acre, best pasture 3s 4d per acre, best arable 4s. after this proportion all the lands in the Survey were valued.A note was added to the Summary in about 1628 expanding on the value of meadow and updating it: in 1605, the best sort of meadow worth 5s, in 1628, 16s; the second quality 2s 6d in 1605, in 1628, 12s; the third quality 1s in 1605, in 1628 6s 8d.

Note that the document only describes that part of the village that belonged to the Lordship of Middleham. It EXCLUDES the land belonging to Coverham Abbey and Easby Abbey, and all Little Crakehall except the three properties shown in italics. You can see a survey of the Coverham Abbey farms and cottages, made at about the same time, HERE
